Matte lipstick is definitely back. With the demand growing for rich pigmented vampy matte lipsticks, more and more cosmetic companies are showing up to the party.

Napoleon Perdis Mattetastic Lipstick RRP $39

Napleon Perdis Mattestastic Lipsticks Sheet

The Packaging

A sleek, slender black tube that’s very chic and slips easily into handbags and clutches. Much more slimmer that the DeVine Goddess Lipsticks.  The coolest thing about these lipsticks is they have a colour band around the centre for easy colour detection. Clever.

The Texture

Creamy. Hydrating. Two things that all matte lipsticks should be, but alas are usually not. The Napoleon Perdis Mattestastics are super smooth and feel like you’re applying a lip balm, a welcome feeling for dry lips in this weather.

The Pigment

I usually pay particular attention to darker shades and especially reds when talking pigment, because those are the shades that one would wear the boldest. All of the shades are richly pigmented so you can get rich, block colour easily. All shades are creme (shimmer free) apart from Lana which has a tiny hint of sparkle. Both reds, Marlene & Veronica are blue based.

The Wear

I put these little bad boys to the test and was surprised. The moment I felt the texture being so creamy on my lips I thought uh-oh… but lo and behold the colour lasted superbly. I applied Rita which isn’t the darkest colour, but still has some punch to it. I resisted the temptation to apply gloss (I am a gen Y child after all) and enjoyed hours of no touching up. Win!

5 out of 5 for these matte lippies from PRO! If you’re on the market for a matte lipstick then definitely consider one of these babies. The only thing is I wish there were more shades to play with, but then again 100 wouldn’t be enough for me :)

nails inc. BLING IT ON ROCKS Review, Swatches + DIY

So as you may or may not have noticed the world has gone a little crazy over nails. Neon, block colour, caviar, nail wraps, nail art the whole shebang. Now all this nail art business has got me super excited because there are all these fabulous little kits that you can get to do your nails at home and have them looking a million bucks in a flash. When the following kit came  in to Adore Beauty HQ there were several squeals of delight.

Now what I love about this kit is a) you get heaps of product, b) it’s super well priced, c) you get amazing results with little effort put it. Basically, it’s really hard to botch it.

So here is a step by step guide on how to apply nails inc. BLING IT ON ROCKS which I applied on the lovely Sarah.

Step 1

Pour a small amount of your desired coloured Bling into the application tray.

(please excuse my poor forgotten about nails!)

NP Set Foundations Swatches & Reviews

Forget all you have heard about NP Set and read this; I first came across NP Set years ago, before my days at Adore Beauty, whilst working in Department Stores. I liked the packaging, I lovvved the price and the great range of colours, plus the fact that there were products in the range that I felt filled a hole in the Napoleon Perdis prestige range. Fast forward a few years later and inevitably some products have come and gone, but I’ve been playing with the range for the past couple of weeks and am totally in love and amazed and how underestimated this brand is.

First up, foundations. There are four products that can be used for skin in the NP Set range;

NP Set Memory Foundation RRP $39

Sheer/light to medium coverage foundation, brilliant range of shades, Set 1 through to 7. For the most part these shades are yellow based.

NP Set Memory Foundation 2

NP Set It Takes Two  RRP $35

Medium to full coverage, this foundation is simply gorgeous on and comes with a handy concealer in the lid. Only three shades in this one, hopefully more to come.

NP Set It Takes Two

NP Set Pasarella Powder Foundation RRP $39

Well hello my favourite new powder compact! This is one of the smoothest, silkiest powders I’ve used and looks amazing on! Works brilliantly on it’s own or over any liquid foundation.

NP Set Pasarella Powder

NP Set BB Cream SPF 20 RRP $29

Sheer to light coverage, shade is similar to a Set 2 from Memory Foundation. I was actually surprised and how nice this BB Cream sits on my combination skin. When sealed with Pasarella Powder Foundation, this is the perfect everyday base.

NP Set BB Cream

Here are some swatches of the foundation on the beautiful Sarah. Starting from left to right; 1. Sarah with no make-up, 2. NP Set BB Cream, 3. NP Set Memory Foundation, 4. It Takes Two.

Sarah NP Set Foundation Swatches

This image quite accurately shows the difference of coverage between each foundation. BB Cream and Memory Foundation look similar in the images however BB Cream is definitely lighter.

NP Set now available at Adore Beauty

What do you guys think? Have you tried NP Set?

Professional Makeup Kit for Makeup Artists – Foundations

So following my previous post, Professional Makeup Kit for Makeup Artists – Where To Start? I’ve had heaps of requests to continue on other elements in a professional makeup artists kit, so I thought I would begin with foundation. Now of course, as mentioned in my previous post, this will vary depending on what kind of clientele you have and also what kind of makeup artist you are. In this post I will go through personal favourites and why I use and love them.

Most of the work I do as a makeup artist these days is weddings, special occasion etc and photo shoots. To ensure I’m always prepared to give clients what they want I carry:

- Buildable coverage Liquid Foundation – oil free formula and luminous formula (SPF free)

- Full coverage foundation (SPF free)

- Super sheer foundation/tinted moisturiser

- Foundation Sticks (I know they may seem a little old fashion but are a must!)

- Mineral Powder Foundation

FOUNDATION

Foundation Group

Now I have a few sets of foundation in my kit but am always adding bits and pieces to keep up with new technology, new releases and my client’s needs and demands. The following are my staple ranges.

One range I am particularly fond of is Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation and Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme Foundation.

Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation

LMOFSWarmIvory

Coverage: Medium to Full – buildable

Finish: Satin/Matte

Price: $59

Good for: Special occasion, wedding, shoots, film.

Fragrance & Silicone Free

The recently re-formulated Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation is an absolute dream. Perfect for all skin types (even dry if you prep the skin accordingly).

I love this foundation for its buildable coverage. Seriously, you can perfect almost any skin with this foundation and a little Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. The new formulation is more pigmented than the last, read my post on the formulation changes here and I love it although you do have to work a little quicker with it. This is my go-to foundation because of its versatility and because it photographs beautifully. The colour range is pretty darn good although from time to time of course you will need to mix it up a little. I use Warm Ivory and Sunny Beige the most.

Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme Foundation

Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme Foundation

Coverage: Medium to Full – buildable

Finish: Satin/Matte

Price: $59

Good for: Special occasion, wedding, shoots, film.

Fragrance & Silicone Free

I don’t use this as much as I use my oil-free but don’t get me wrong it definitely has a place in my kit. Perfect for a dry/mature skin this foundation gives great coverage and a really nice soft focus finish. The shades are named the same as the Oil Free Supreme however they can differ slightly due to ingredient differences so take caution.

BECCA Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation

BECCA Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation

Coverage: Sheer to Medium – buildable

Finish: Satin

Price: $70

Good for: Special occasion, wedding, shoots, film.

This is the latest range I’ve added to my collection. I was so excited when BECCA finally brought out a proper liquid foundation and even more excited when I tried it and loved it! You can see previous post where I compare the Radiant Skin Satin Finish to the Luminous Skin Colour here.

This foundation gives a sheer to medium coverage with a satin finish. Works on most skin types I especially love to use it on a normal to dry. Although there are quite a few shades in the range I feel a couple are missing so I do need to mix and match often.

Napoleon Perdis Off Duty Tinted Moisturiser

Napoleon Perdis Off Duty Tinted Moisturiser

Coverage: Sheer

Finish: Luminous/Dewy

Price: $49

Good for: Special occasion, wedding, runway.

This product is perfect for that “barely there” foundation look. Works well when you want to enhance the skin and give it a gorgeous glow, also works beautifully on the body. Napoleon Perdis uses this product a LOT on the runway and it looks spectacular. I usually use it on clients who want that no makeup look.
Available in 2 shades; Light to Medium and Medium to Dark

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Foundation

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Foundation

Coverage: Full

Finish: Radiant

Price: $69.00

Good for: Special occasion, wedding, runway, shoots.

Well what can I say. This is the mother of all creme foundations. It gives an absolutely gorgeous creamy flawless finish. Clients with a mature or dry skin absolutely LOVE this stuff and so do I. It contains Dermaxyl (an ingredient I’ve come across before in Smashbox primers) which smooths out fine lines and imperfections on the skin. The coverage is full although can be applied mixed with an illuminator for a gorgeous medium coverage, glowy finish. Again, no SPF so this one photographs brilliantly, however this foundation is packaged in large heavy glass jars so I would recommend decanting them into something more portable.

Inika Mineral Foundation

Inika Mineral Foundation

Coverage: Sheer to full – buildable

Finish: Natural (once settled)

Price: $59.95

Good for: Special occasion, wedding, runway, shoots.

This foundation is the best mineral powder I have tried to date. The coverage is almost unbelievable and once it’s settled it gives that airbrush look. Many a time have I surprised clients with the amazing finish of this product plus it’s very long lasting even without a setting powder. (not that I’m recommending you don’t use a setting powder on top!)

This is a proper mineral foundation so it contains no talc, therefore it’s fine to use on a dry skin. I’ve had no adverse reactions to this particular foundation either, so for me, it’s winning on all fronts. The colour range is pretty good however I do find myself having to mix every now and then.

Plus this foundation photographs brilliantly, no backflash!

I hope this helps! What kind of foundation do you guys use in your kits? Any favourites?

Napoleon Perdis Masterclass

On Wednesday night, I was lucky enough to attend a Napoleon Perdis Masterclass, starring the man himself, Napoleon Perdis. Well, what can I say other than wow. The makeup, the atmosphere, the music. It all reminded me of how much I love this industry. The vibe in the room was brilliant. A room full of people who shared the same passion and were on the edge of their seats watching every brush stroke in awe.

Moments before the Masterclass commenced…

Napoleon Perdis MAsterclass Creative Team

Napoleon’s fabulous creative team

Napoleon covered his latest “Pretty Preppy” look and took us through a demonstration. Pretty Preppy is all about nude skin and a clean finish, with minimal eye make up and focus on the lips and skin.  The campaign image used is of a model from Fashion Week. Napoleon explained how he believed she perfectly captured the Pretty Preppy look.

Napoleon Perdis Pretty Preppy

Napoleons Top Tips For Pretty Preppy

1. Keep skin gorgeous and light. Apply Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Skin Renewal Serum into the skin with a stippling brush, wait a moment, then apply Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer in the method before using a light coverage foundation, Napoleon opted for Off Duty Tinted Moisturiser. He then finished off by pressing in Camera Finish using his favourite #35R brush.

Napoleon PErdis Pretty Preppy Base

2. Brows, brows, brows! Napoleon applies his Brow Pencil from the outside in and then brushes brows back in to place using a spoolie. He prefers this way as it helps him achieve beautiful, balanced brows.  PRO TIP: On a mature skin, use China Doll Gel Eye liner in Earth to fill in brows, it lasts longer!

3. Lip. Napoleon creates an “expensive looking lip” by applying Napoleon Perdis Colour Disc in Scarlet on top of  DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Eros. I absolutely LOVED this tip! It just took the lip colour to a different dimension.

Napoleon Perdis Pretty Preppy Lips

In addition to Pretty Preppy, Napoleon went through 3 additional looks on the night, Luxe Lash, Total Chic and Smoky 2013.

After a very inspirational 2 hour+ Masterclass, we were led into his concept store to meet the man himself and subject ourselves to paparazzi. Below is a couple of snaps taken on an iPhone, excuse the bad lighting!

All in all a truly fabulous night, great tips, a great vibe plus some hints on some very exciting products coming out for Napoleon this year!
